Why couples therapy?
The health of our closest relationships impacts our ability to live well. When we spend the majority of a marriage or intimate relationship in distress or unresolved conflict, we feel the impact ripple out to all corners of our lives. For couples I work with, the stuckness can begin to feel hopeless and the path towards connection foreign or unknown. Many couples that arrive in therapy describe some version of the following:
“We get stuck in a cycle that we can never seem to get out of and that we don’t know how to stop”
“We’ve lost sight of what this relationship once felt like”
“I can’t reach her”; “All he does is criticize me”; “I can never get it right”; “I don’t feel important to them anymore”
I work with couples to help each partner gain greater access to their emotional truth. Emotions are signals from our bodies that help us connect to ourselves and the people we love. When we can connect to our emotions and find ways to have them received by our loved ones, needs can get met and reconnection becomes possible.
In Emotionally Focused Therapy, I will work as your relationship consultant to:
Identify what happens in your cycle of disconnection and help you to create a shared story of your relationship
Help create a safe space where the argument you always have can lead to a different outcome
Guide you in forming new patterns and ways of communicating that can result in you feeling seen and heard
Facilitate a conversation that feels more truthful, real, and honest
