What will individual therapy be like?

Emotional healing can begin in many ways but I often see it happen when clients are able to:

  • Experience emotion that has previously felt scary, threatening or off limits;

  • Revisit a memory that has felt overwhelming to look at alone;

  • Or be with sensation in their body that has felt locked down or inaccessible.

When clients get to have these experiences in a safe, new way with someone they trust, they may see a lift in symptoms, such as anxiety, rumination, depression, and shame. We will move towards healing deliberately and at a pace that feels right for you.

I work with individuals using a modality called AEDP, which stands for Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (I know, it’s a mouthful). AEDP was born out of extensive research in affective neuroscience, attachment theory, emotion theory, somatic/body-focused approaches, and transformational studies. But in practice, AEDP is much more simple. It is really about not being alone with pain and finding ways to re-engage with your emotional world so that healing can happen. AEDP therapists believe that every person has an innate “self-righting” tendency, meaning that each one of us already has what it takes to heal and flourish. Therapy, from this perspective, is about bringing the part of you that already knows how to heal to the surface.

To learn more about AEDP, ask me about it when we meet! Or visit the AEDP website.
